I depart from my usually budget-conscious gift recommendations to promote two pricier purchases that have been invaluable to me this past year. A press release for the Dolly Cart arrived in the mail one morning, and looking at the black metal, box-like cart, I thrilled to see the reincarnation of the simple garden cart my father bought in the '70s and for which I had searched in vain these past 10 years. I immediately called and spoke to the owner of the company at length about the cart's different features, including its ability to transform from cart to dolly within a minute or so of toolless fiddling. By conversation's end the cart was on its way.
When it arrived I stopped everything to assemble it and test its weight-bearing capacity with a willing 80-pound neighbor (it holds up to 250 pounds.) Because the large handle is angled up, it comes to just the right height for effortless pushing or pulling. When I converted it to a dolly and took my volunteer on another ride, it proved equally facile. It has since done yeoman's duty hauling compost, leaves, wood and plants around the garden. A hitch attachment means I can drive it behind the rider mower, another plus for heavy loads. The pneumatic bicycle tires make for a smooth trip, and a full load is easy to tip out. Long story short, I love it.
